Lucy Ngwabeni

Non-Executive Director – SAWIMIH

Lucy Ngwabeni is a dynamic social entrepreneur and experienced leader whose strategic insight and commitment to transformation have positioned her as a driving force in both the mining and local development sectors.

Known for her results-driven leadership and deep community engagement, she has consistently been called upon to lead high-impact initiatives that require a strong governance foundation and a collaborative spirit.

Her career has included public representation as a councillor, during which she chaired key committees such as Sanitation, Local Economic Development (LED), and Infrastructure, playing a crucial role in improving service delivery and advancing developmental priorities within local government.

Lucy is currently completing a Women in Leadership course through North-West University (NWU), further strengthening her capabilities in governance, ethical leadership, and organisational strategy. She previously earned a Certificate in Municipal Management from NWU (2004), and enhanced her industry-specific knowledge through the Executive Preparatory Programme for the Mining and Minerals Sector (2005)—a collaboration between the University of Johannesburg, University of the Witwatersrand, UNISA, and the Mining Qualifications Authority.

Key outcomes of that programme included:

  • Responsible exploration of ore bodies
  • Understanding the value of minerals to South Africa’s economy
  • Finding and evaluating ore bodies
  • Establishing the viability of mining ventures

In addition to her directorship at SAWIMIH, Lucy is a seasoned leader in sectoral advocacy organisations. She is a former Secretary of SAWIMA and a former Deputy President of the South African Women in Construction (SAWIC), where she played a key role in shaping the agenda for women’s empowerment in mining and construction industries.

Her hands-on leadership, sector knowledge, and advocacy for inclusive growth continue to make Lucy a strategic asset to SAWIMIH and a respected figure in women-led development initiatives.
